On June 28, the construction of FengjingTown of Jinshan District, Shanghai’s key experimental town, has entered the stage of starting up. By then, the ‘one city and nine towns’, Shanghai’s key suburban places to be developed in the tenth five year plan, have all been started up. As the gateway close to Zhejiang Province, Fengjing Town will be built into a modern environment friendly town with north American style, supported by apparel machinery industry, and having the functions of commerce and trade, tourism and entertainment, and residence. According to the plan, its planned area is 8 square kilometers and population is 75,000. Its layout reflects advanced planning concept, focusing on the balanced integration of the town and the nature. It has one center ( the city center), two axes (Fu Rong Road and Feng Lin Road), three squares ( one central square and two entrance squares), four areas (commercial and trade area, old town area, new town area, and industrial area). Among them, the shining point is a park called ‘Hong Feng Gu’, which displays the concept of north American style maple forest, and meanwhile possessing the characteristics of China’s eastern water towns. Zhou Yupeng, the member of CPC committee and deputy mayor of the city, and Yang Xiong, deputy mayor of the city attended the startup ceremony on June 28. Zhou Yupeng emphasized that the key experimental towns should become example towns for modern town system construction in Shanghai’s suburban areas, the important bridge and development area that links Shanghai with the other parts of Yangtze Delta Area, and the example area displaying Shanghai’s value and accomplishments.
